Shangri-La Diet - Questions on Sugars

Well, this is the 3rd time I have posted today. I have a feeling that in the beginning, I will be posting a lot, until I get used to it.

At lunchtime, I still felt icky from all the sugar, and I felt pretty full too. But I decided to at least eat half of my sandwich and my orange, so that I would not be stuck feeling hungry later.

Now it is mid-afternoon, time for another sugar water, but I think I will skip it for today. I think I will start again tomorrow, with just 1 tablespoon of sugar at a time (I had 3 tablespoons this morning).

I have also decided to skip the fructose idea and stay with sugar. Why? Here are the reasons...

At lunchtime I did a little surfing for information on the sugar/fructose thing.

One place I looked was the author's own website, www.sethroberts.net. I discovered he has forums there, and I even posted a question and got it answered. (Quick answer!) See this thread: Fructose Water or Sugar Water?. My question is here.

I also did a little research on fructose, and ended up at this page about the dangers of fructose. This is why I have decided to stick to the sugar, and in smaller amounts.

It is now 3:00 in the afternoon, and I am still not hungry. Usually by now, I have eaten a lot bigger lunch and an afternoon snack. So, I think I can get by on less sugar than what I did today.

For some reason, I don't want to do the oil instead.

Shangri-La Diet - Day 1 Continued

Ok, I just got done drinking my first glass of sugar water - 3 tbsp. of sugar dissolved in a large glass of water.

It took me longer than 1/2 hour to drink it, it was so sickening sweet. It took 45 minutes. I am definitely going to have to get fructose instead.

When I had the high blood sugar a year ago ("pre-diabetes" - fasting level was 120 and it should be under 100), I got rid of it by cutting out sweets from my diet. Lately I have been cheating and eating quite a bit of chocolate, but not many sweets other than the chocolate.

So I am not used to drinking such sweetnes. Ugh.

Just to compare, this morning I checked how much sugar was in Coke. I had some small bottles of Coke (12 oz., I think) left over from when my son was visiting. The bottle said 180 calories, and since all the calories in Coke must come from the sugar, that would be equivalent to 4 tablespoons of sugar (45 calories per tablespoon).

So what I am doing is less than drinking 2 Cokes a day. But I am still worried, and will switch to fructose as soon as I can get some. I will also check my blood sugar again tomorrow morning.

Shangri-La Diet - Day 1

Weight: 199 lbs.
Fasting Blood Sugar: 97

I ordered the Shangri-La Diet book from amazon.com, and I read it last night. It is pretty short, and I am a fast reader, so I was able to read the whole thing in one evening, although I did skim some of the later chapters pretty fast.

I am very excited to be starting it today. It really sounds like it could work. The author has gotten quite a few testimonials, almost all of them very positive.

I decided to go with the sugar water rather than the extra-light olive oil. I am going to start with 6 tablespoons of sugar, 3 in the morining and 3 in the afternoon.

Eventually I may go to fructose. This is not supposed to raise your blood sugar as much as sucrose does. But for right now, I didn't have any fructose in the house, and I did have sugar, so ... I will just make sure to sip it slowly over 1/2 hour, like the book says.

So here goes Day 1 - I will keep you posted.

About

I am starting the Shangri-La Diet today, and I am starting this blog at the same time, to keep a diary of my progress. Hopefully this will help other people who are considering this diet.

My weight today is 199 lbs. I am 5'5", so this is way too heavy. I would be happy to lose 50 lbs, getting to 150 lbs, but actually a better weight for me would be around 130 - 140 lbs. We'll see how it goes.

About a year ago, my blood sugar was a little high. It was not diabetes yet, but it was higher than it should be (I guess you could call it pre-diabetes). So the doctor prescribed a glucose monitor so that I could check it once in a while, to make sure it is not getting too high. It is best if it stays under 100 (first thing in the morning before eating). I tested my blood sugar today, and it is at 97.

I plan to check my blood sugar from time to time during the diet, to make sure that the sugar water is not elevating my blood sugar too much.

Please remember that this blog is only my experience with the diet. It is not to be taken as a recommendation. Check with your doctor before going on any diet.
